Hello; in this blog I will explain the IELTS essay structure for all types of IELTS writing task 2 essays. The use of correct IELTS essay structure is a must if you want to score 6+ band score in the IELTS writing. To learn and use the below-given structure to get your desired band score.

1. IELTS essay structure of Discuss both views and give your opinion essays:

Introduction:       

General sentence + discuss both views   + Thesis statement ( Give your opinion) 

Main body paragraph 1:    

Main Topic sentence ( 1st idea) + Elaborate and support the topic sentence ( 2 or 3 sentences ) + Give an example ( 1 or 2 sentence)

Main body paragraph 2 :    

2nd topic sentence or another view ( 1 sentence) + elaborate the idea ( 2 or 3 sentences ) + Give relevant example ( 1 or 2 sentence)

Explain your opinion:       

Give topic sentence + Supporting line ( 1 or 2 sentences)

Conclusion :     

Give a summary of both views ( 1 or 2 sentence ) + restate your opinion ( 1 sentence) + Give future reference ( 1 sentence )


2. IELTS essay structure of Advantages outweigh Disadvantages type essay:

Introduction:

General sentence + Paraphrase the given question + state merits outweighs demerits ( Thesis sentence )

Main body paragraph 1:

State 1st advantage + support the advantage ( 3 or 4 sentences) + Give relevant example ( 2 or 3 sentences)

Main body paragraph 2 : 

Give 2nd advantage + Elaborate the advantage by supporting sentence ( 3 or 4 sentences) + Give an example ( 2 or 3 sentences)

Main body paragraph 3 :

 Give disadvantage + supporting sentence ( 3 or 4 sentences) + give example ( optional)

Conclusion:

Summarize all advantages and disadvantages and state advantage outweighs disadvantages ( 2 or 3 sentences )

 

3. IELTS essay structure of disadvantages outweigh advantages Essay:

Introduction:

General sentence + Paraphrase the given question + state demerits outweighs merits ( Thesis sentence )

Main body paragraph 1:

State 1st disadvantage + support the disadvantage ( 3 or 4 sentences) + Give relevant example ( 2 or 3 sentences)

Main body paragraph 2 : 

Give 2nd disadvantage + Elaborate the disadvantage by supporting sentence ( 3 or 4 sentences) + Give an example

Main body paragraph 3 : 

Give one advantage + supporting sentence (3 or 4 sentences) + give example (optional)

Conclusion:

Summarize all advantages and disadvantages and state disadvantage outweighs advantages ( 2 or 3 sentences ).


4. Essay structure of What are the advantages and disadvantages type essay:

Introduction: 

General sentence + paraphrase the topic + thesis sentence (state you are going to discuss both advantages and disadvantages)

Tip: do not state advantage or disadvantage in the introduction. Moreover, Do not state your opinion as this is not an advantage outweigh the disadvantage essay.

Main body paragraph 1 :

State advantages + supporting sentences ( 3 or 4 sentence) + give relevant example ( 2 or 3 sentences)

Main body paragraph 2:

Give disadvantages + supporting sentences ( 3 or 4 sentences ) + Give relevant example ( 2 or 3 sentences)

Conclusion:

Summarize the advantages and disadvantages mentioned in body paragraphs ( 2 or 3 sentences)


5. IELTS essay structure for: Is it a Positive or a Negative development? type essay.

If it is a positive development:

Introduction:

General sentence + paraphrase the topic + Thesis statement ( state it is a positive development)

Main body paragraph 1 :

State 1st  positive  + Elaborate the topic by supporting sentences ( 3 or 4 sentences ) + Give an example ( 2 or 3 sentences)

Main body paragraph 2:

State 2nd  positive + Elaborate the topic by supporting sentences ( 3 or 4 sentences ) + Give example ( 2 or 3 sentences )

Main body paragraph 3:

State negatives ( 1 or 2 sentences) + supporting sentence ( 3 or 4 sentences ) + give example ( optional)

Conclusion:

Summarize the positives and negatives and state overall it is a positive development ( 2 or 3 sentence )


if it is a negative development:

Introduction:

General sentence + paraphrase the topic + Thesis statement ( state it is a negative development)

Main body paragraph 1 :

State 1st  negative aspect  + Elaborate the topic by supporting sentences ( 3 or 4 sentences ) + Give an example ( 2 or 3 sentences)

Main body paragraph 2:

State 2nd  negative aspect + Elaborate the topic by supporting sentences ( 3 or 4 sentences ) + Give an example ( 2 or 3 sentences)

Main body paragraph 3:

State positive aspect ( 1 or 2 sentence) + supporting sentence ( 3 or 4 sentence ) + give example ( optional)

Conclusion:

Summarize the positives and negatives and state overall it is a negative development ( 2 or 3 sentence )


6. IELTS essay structure for: What are the reasons/causes of an issue? Give solutions to solve this problem.

Or

Why is this happening? How to combat/tackle this issue?

Introduction:

General sentence + paraphrase the question + Thesis statement ( State there are some reasons/causes of an issue and you will discuss solutions)

Main body paragraph 1:

State reasons/causes/problems ( Maximum two reasons/causes/problems per paragraph + give supporting sentences ( 3 to 4 sentence ) + give example ( 2 or 3 sentences )

Main body paragraph 2 :

Give solutions + supporting sentences ( 3 or 4 sentences ) + give example ( 2 or 3 sentence )

Conclusion:

Summarize the given problems and their solutions ( 2 to 3 sentence )

 

7. Essay structure for : What are the reasons for this change? Is it a positive or a negative development?

Reasons + it is a positive development.

Introduction:

General sentence + paraphrase the question + Thesis statement ( State there are some reasons for the given issue but overall it is a positive development )

Main body paragraph 1:

Give 1st reason + describe the reason by supporting sentences ( 3 to 4 sentences ) + Give an example ( 2 or 3 sentences )

Main body paragraph 2:

Give 2nd reason + describe the reason by supporting sentences ( 3 to 4 sentences ) + Give an example ( 2 or 3 sentences )

Main body paragraph 3:

8. IELTS essay structure for: To what extent do you agree or disagree? Or do you agree or disagree?

Completely agree:

Introduction:

General sentence + paraphrase the question + Thesis statement ( State you are completely agree with the topic )

Main body paragraph 1:

Give 1st sentence showing you are agreeing + supporting sentences ( 3 to 4 sentence + State example ( 2 to 3 sentence )

Main body paragraph 2:

Give 2nd the idea why you are agreeing + supporting sentence ( 3 to 4 sentence ) + Give an example ( 2 to 3 sentence )

Main body paragraph 3:

Disagree with the topic  + supporting sentence ( 1 or 2 sentence ) + example ( optional)

Conclusion:

Summarize why you agree with the given topic in 2 to 3 sentences.


Completely disagree:

Introduction:

General sentence + paraphrase the question + Thesis statement ( State you are completely disagree with the topic )

Main body paragraph 1:

Give 1st  sentence that shows you disagree + supporting sentences ( 3 to 4 sentence + State example ( 2 to 3 sentence )

Main body paragraph 2:

Give 2nd  idea why you disagree + supporting sentence ( 3 to 4 sentence ) + Give example ( 2 to 3 sentence )

Main body paragraph 3:

agree with the topic  + supporting sentence ( 1 or 2 sentence ) + example ( optional)

Conclusion:

Summarize why you disagree with the given topic in a 2 to 3 sentences.


Partially agree:

Introduction:

General sentence + paraphrase the question + thesis statement ( State while you are agree with the topic, you also disagree with the topic to some extent)

Main body paragraph 1:

Give reasons why you agree with topic + support the reasons by supporting sentence ( 3 to 4 sentence ) + give example ( 2 or 3 sentence )

Main body paragraph 2:

Give reasons why you disagree with topic + support the reasons by supporting sentence ( 3 to 4 sentence ) + give example ( 2 or 3 sentence )

Tip: Do not give more than 2 reasons per body paragraph.

Conclusion:

Rephrase the thesis sentence including a summary of the reasons given in body paragraphs ( 2 to 3 sentences )
